Portrait of Anne James

Anne James

Anne James is a cultural anthropologist and former marketing executive who advises tech companies, from early-stage startups to enterprises, on strategy, marketing leadership and AI governance. She is a certified AI Governance Professional (IAPP) and a member of the Center for AI and Digital Policy’s AI Policy Clinic.

She spent more than a decade as Head of Marketing for enterprise software companies, including AI companies partnered with NVIDIA and Anthropic, and has served as Fractional CMO for AI SaaS companies. She knows how AI is built, sold and bought, and what the sales deck leaves out.

Her training as an anthropologist shapes how she works: she starts from how customers and teams actually behave, not from what the dashboard or the strategy deck says. Outside tech, she founded Zymbol, an internationally distributed magazine of contemporary literature and art, and sits on the board of PhotoIreland.

Anthropology taught me to look past what an organisation says, to how it behaves. I’ve seen plenty of earnest AI principles undone by a rushed launch, a vague vendor contract or a sales claim nobody checked. Usually no one notices until a customer or a regulator does. My work is to make sure what you say about your product and your AI holds up where it counts.
